London calling – part 1

It’s been a fantastic few days here in London. We’re staying in Camden in a place that is a really short walk (even with heavy suitcases) from Kings Cross station (yay). We have a little room with a little kitchen, it’s really clean, has a laundry room that is no charge (and because we are on the lower ground floor just two doors away – winning) and the bed is really comfortable . It’s perfect for the price we paid and is close to lots of pubs and restaurants.

Our street, very flash !

This time our trip to London is about hanging with the kids, rather than lots of sightseeing but we do manage to do some. I mean it’s London- right?

Our first British beer for the trip.

We (I) love a market and the Camden Markets always deliver. It’s crazy busy but lots of fun. Lots of yummy food. It’s an easy trip on the tube on the Northern Line.

We’ve never been on a Jack the Ripper tour and so decided to take a free one with London locals. Nathan was our very knowledgable tour guide who walked us through the streets of the City of London, talking us through the many theories around Jack the Ripper, as well as describing the crimes which were seriously disturbing.

Nathan our tour guide

Nathan poised a question that got me thinking. Why we are still intrigued by the gruesome murders of these poor women? Is it because the identity of this horrendous killer remains unknown, is it the macabre setting in creepy old London Town, or is it that we associate this killer with a top hat and tails, so it adds to the drama that he’s a gentleman by day and a monster by night? Or could it simply be that there are fantastic story tellers who keep the story alive? I’d love to say that at the end of the tour I was sure on whodunnit .. but I’m not. What I can say is that we had an entertaining couple of hours with Nathan, scary, but not enough to keep me awake and certainly interesting so that I am now keen to solve these murders.
