Are you going to Scarborough Fair?

I had to include a photo of Steve’s breakfast this morning. He has had the smoked salmon a couple of times …yummy! The breakfast here has been sensational so thank goodness we are doing a lot of walking each day.

Our first stop of the day was York with us dropping Meggie off as she was travelling to London to visit her cousin, and then we headed to Malton to Eden Camp. In the brochure it is described as a “Great day out for all the family”, I am not sure that this is really the case… What I would say is that when the same brochure says that it is the “Only modern history theme museum of its type in the world” that is certainly correct.

Steve described a lot of the exhibitions here as very similar to Year 6 history projects and he is right, however as they are housed in the buildings of an original world war 2 prisoner of war camp, they do have some validity. As I told my fellow travellers this place has potential and needs some cash poured into it to update the supporting props, as some of the interactive bits (like going into a u-boat simulator) are quite good. The other important thing to note was that the other visitors at Eden Camp were school groups or people who could provide first hand experience of what the blitz was like…

Highlights for me included the “Great Escape” display, walking down a war time street in London and their map of Australia.

We then decided to head for the seaside town of Scarborough, along the way seeing our first group of gypsies by the side of the road. It is hard to imagine how families can sustain this way of living, the horses were just beautiful but everything else looked just a little bit tired.

Scarborough is an interesting place, the GFC may have hit it pretty hard and it kind of feels like the Canberra Show but on a larger scale ( well certainly down by the water anyway), we spent a little time trying to find somewhere to eat, looking really to get some fish and chips that we could eat by the seaside, we ended up at the Princess Cafe having burgers and toasted sandwiches. Feeling a little dejected we headed to the imposing castle that sits on the top of the hill, with pretty low expectations to be honest, only to be wowed.

Scarborough Castle provides unbelievable views right across the town and Bay Area. There has been something on the site for more than 2,500 years, those kind of dates are so hard to comprehend. The current castle was built in the 1200’s. The audio guide and tour are great and the grounds quite expansive – Scarborough Castle is absolutely a castle worth visiting. Just below the castle is St Mary’s Church that dates back to 1180, and whilst it’s had a couple of rebuilds over the centuries it is still in operation and you can imagine it as a good location for the odd ghost story.

We have been on the go for hours so head home for tea at the Fairfax Arms, the steak and ale pie for me, a cider and bed. Only one more day before we leave this lovely part of the world as we make our way slowly to Bristol…. Last photo is a view from our room.
