From a castello to a convento

We started the morning with a beautiful breakfast in the castle, then we walked the Castello de Obidos walls. It’s about 13 metres high and goes for about 1.5 km stopping abruptly when we reach the spot that the dragons are sleeping.

The checkout time is 12.00pm and unfortunately no sampling of chocolate was undertaken (as they were still setting up) and we then made the long trek back to the car, thank fully it is mostly down hill. Obidos is really quiet beautiful and the castle is a really lovely place to stay, but if you have trouble walking up steps there are so many that I think it would be a real struggle. Having said that I loved it here and like most of the places we have visited I am sad to be saying goodbye.

Oh and there is a gorgeous little library that was once a church, tick, tick 💗.

From Obidos we make our way to another very famous surfing spot Nazare. Nazare is famous for some of the biggest (if not the biggest) waves in the world. These perfect giant waves are the result of the Nazare Canyon which is almost five kilometres deep in some places a true underwater geomorphological phenomenon.

The waves weren’t huge today unfortunately but you could certain!y sense the power of the water – absolutely incredible to watch from afar (yes I’m a chicken and didn’t get too close).

There was a real buzz around the place even though it wasn’t a big wave day, and so it is very easy to imagine the place jam packed in summer with people from all over the world coming to the beach and hoping to say they conquered the waves here. We ate lunch overlooking the beach at some permanent caravan type food places, the food was great and as I said the vibe relaxed and friendly.

From Nazare we made our way to Fatima. When we arrived I must say that I was shocked by the size and scale of the place, millions and millions of dollars must be spent here each year for the upkeep of the many different places of worship. As you walk through a huge square it isn’t hard to imagine it when it is teeming with the hundreds of thousands of people who come here every year to celebrate Easter and Christmas masses. Although it is significant in size it does have a real feeling of peace and serenity.

From Fatima, we travel to Belmonte as tonight we are staying at Convento de Belmonte and it is stunning. We have continued to have wonderful places to stay throughout this holiday, all very different but somehow perfect. The convent has 24 bedrooms and has been built on a hill overlooking the town, each room has a balcony facing the Estrela mountain range. As we arrived so late (just before 8.00pm) we have dinner in the hotel restaurant. Our food and the Convent made Rose is exquisite.

Tomorrow we are Porto bound, where we will stay for a couple of nights. In case you wondered yes I am having the best time.💗

You are being spoilt! What a wonderful trip. So beautiful. I’m told the Portugal/Spain border is one of the oldest in the world. Such history. Great pics. 😊
