It’s a wet Sunday morning in Bilbao perfect for a tour of a museum. This morning we visited the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, which is not far from our hotel. Entry into the museum was free as there are renovation works afoot, which is great news for us.
The museum like the Guggenheim is a mixture of classical and contemporary pieces, and I’ve picked a few below that I liked – there is a good mixture of artists at this museum. It is relatively small and took me about an hour to get through.

Jusepe de Ribera (1621)

As the weather cleared up we started our walk around Bilbao including many of its fabulous bridges but not all of them… here are just a few – I love a good bridge 😀.

We also took the funicular up Mount Artxanda. The funicular opened in 1915 and has been in operation ever since, except for a small break in the 70s and 80s. Within a couple of minutes you are above the city, the weather wasn’t the best but you can imagine how good the views would be on a clearer day.

Some of the photos of this gorgeous place on our way back to the hotel.

We also took some pictures of the Palm Sunday parades happening here in Bilbao. Easter Week was first celebrated here in 1554 when the arrival of a splinter from Christs cross led to the founding of the first brotherhood, that of the True Cross. Nowadays, Bilbao’s Passion consists of a total of thirteen processions in which over 3,000 brothers take part every year, we saw glimpses of three of these parades.

They are pretty amazing to watch with lots of drums and noise. I couldn’t help but think that it’s such a shame that the clothing that they are wearing so reverently has been used by such awful groups elsewhere in the world.
We’ve got an early morning tomorrow a train to Madrid leaving at 7.00am for our last few days in Spain. Oh and yes I had one quick look at the Guggenheim again today 💗.
